SUMMARY:Discovering Diptera: Flies Under the Microscope
DESCRIPTION:Hoverflies\, horseflies\, houseflies\, fruit flies\, soldierflies\, bee-flies\, craneflies\, greenbottles\, mosquitoes and more: flies are all around us\, but are often overlooked or even actively discouraged. In fact the true flies\, or Diptera\, are one of the most species-rich orders of insect in the UK\, with over 7\,000 species to choose from. \nThis day course will provide an introduction to the Diptera\, getting familiar with some of the major families and with a focus on some of the larger and more colourful species in the hoverfly\, soldierfly\, robberfly and related families. The course will be mostly based in the classroom\, using microscopes and specimens to learn how to identify the different groups. We will also spend a short time outside searching for winter flies. This course is suitable for beginners with an interest in insects\, as well as countryside professionals (but please note that we will be working with dead specimens\, which are essential for identification in many cases).

SUMMARY:Site Assessment Using Invertebrates
DESCRIPTION:A course designed to help students develop higher level skills in the interpretation of invertebrate survey data. The role of standardised sampling protocols will be explored through fieldwork and through team work a set of accurate species determinations will be obtained. for analysis and interpretation. Analysis by a variety of different techniques (including species richness\, Wetscore\, SQI\, and PANTHEON including ISIS) will be discussed to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of each technique. The relevance of population size\, indicator species\, habitat fidelity and species assemblages in assessing an invertebrate fauna will be discussed. \nThis course can be taken as part of the MSc in Biological Recording run by Manchester Metropolitan University

SUMMARY:Entomology - Techniques to Find and Identify Insects
DESCRIPTION:Rose Chafer on the Devon coast\nInsects are fascinating creatures: many are attractive\, and have fascinating life histories and behaviour. They also play important roles in ecosystems\, for example in pollinating plants and providing food for birds\, making the decline of many insect species a cause for concern. \nSlapton is an ideal location for seeing and learning about insects. The wide variety of habitats – woodland\, reedbed\, maritime grassland and coastal cliffs – will allow us to study a range of species\, from habitat specialists to generalists\, in some beautiful locations. \nThe focus will be on terrestrial insect groups\, and we’ll aim to identify everything we find to Order\, most to Family\, many to Genus and quite a lot to Species level! We will demonstrate why\, when and how to collect and curate insect specimens for identification and will also explore the options for photographing and identifying live insects.

SUMMARY:Surveying Terrestrial Invertebrates for Biological Recording
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for anyone interested in the amazing diversity of invertebrate life found in terrestrial habitats. It is suitable for both countryside professionals and amateur naturalists. \nField excursions will introduce a variety of collecting and surveying techniques appropriate to a range of habitats. These will be complemented by workshop sessions back at the Centre\, helping you to identify specimens to the correct taxonomic group and\, where appropriate\, to species level. Illustrated talks will provide an insight into the diversity\, ecology and conservation of invertebrates. \nThis course can contribute to the Biological Recording programmes run jointly with Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). Credits can contribute towards the University Certificate in Biological Recording and Species Identification and the MSc Biological Recording. To gain University Credits you must register in advance.

SUMMARY:Dipterists Forum Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is the annual workshop meeting for Dipterists Forum at Preston Montford FSC\, Shropshire. This year soldierflies and allies are one of the groups being covered. \n“This advanced workshop tackles two Diptera groups\, Anthomyiidae (flower flies) and some of the larger Brachycera (soldierflies and allies). The larger Brachycera include many charismatic species popular with recorders but\, despite their large size and colourful appearance\, not all are easy to identify. The more tricky species\, for example among horseflies\, robber-flies and stiletto-flies\, are the focus of the workshop. Anthomyiidae (flower flies) is a family of about 240 species of dark bristly flies whose larvae are mainly miners in plants but also in dung and fungi. They include some very common species but are often ignored owing to a reputation for being difficult to identify. New keys and excellent illustrations place them well within the capability of more experienced entomologists.” \nSessions will be lead by expert members of the Dipterists Forum. \nSee the link below for full details and booking.

SUMMARY:Light-trapped insects – going beyond the moths
DESCRIPTION:Light traps are most widely used for attracting moths\, but a wide range of other insects come to light as well\, including craneflies\, caddisflies\, beetles (especially dung\, ground\, water and burying beetles)\, water bugs\, lacewings and wasps. By learning to recognise at least a few of these other insects moth-trappers can make significant contributions to the recording schemes for other groups. This workshop will focus on the non-moth species that are most frequently seen in and around moth traps\, providing guidance on how to identify them and what resources are available. Please bring along your specimens and photos of any light-trapped insects as long as they aren’t moths! \nThe workshop has been arranged following discussions at the 2017 Coleopterists’ Day about how to encourage the recording of light-trapped beetles. \nFree to attend\, but places must be booked via the BENHS link below.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Autumn Moths
DESCRIPTION:Autumn is the season when some very attractive moths are flying\, some of which have beautiful colours to match the falling leaves. This one-day course provides an introduction to moths; their identification\, natural history and conservation. The afternoon will be a mix of presentations and activities (classroom and field-based) whilst the evening session will be spent moth-trapping around the Centre as darkness falls. \nNOTE TIMES: 2pm–10.30pm

SUMMARY:Soldierflies and allies study day
DESCRIPTION:Soldierflies and allies (including robberflies\, bee-flies\, horseflies and others) include some of our largest and most colourful insects. Some are easy to find whereas others require dedicated searching\, but these flies are within reach of anyone with an interest in insects. Along with the hoverflies they provide an ideal starting point for the study of Diptera (the True Flies)\, with good identification keys available in well-illustrated books. \nThis day course includes a morning at the Lye Valley SSSI near Headington\, which contains some very special wetland habitats\, where we will learn about soldierflies and hopefully find flies to look at more closely. We’ll head back to the museum for lunch\, and then continue the afternoon session using microscopes to examine what we’ve caught and to make use of the museum’s extensive collections to practice identification skills and get familiar with this diverse group of flies. \nThe course is suitable for beginners with an interest in insects\, as well as more experienced entomologists who wish to develop their knowledge of this group. \nThe course will be led by Martin Harvey\, who runs the national recording scheme for soldierflies and allies\, and Judy Webb\, who leads conservation work at Lye Valley and has a special interest in soldierfly ecology. \nThree-lined Soldierfly (Oxycera trilineata) by Judy Webb
